(Feb 18) Joe Ciampi's Tiger basketball team never led in regulation,
yet tied the game with 11 seconds to play forcing overtime.
In overtime, Auburn scored first and led by a basket before
succumbing to the homestanding Vols, 72-67.
(Feb 18) Auburn overwhelm VMI in baseball action this weekend,
downing the outclassed Keydets 14-0, 6-0, and 14-3 in a
double-header on Saturday and a single game on Sunday. The
Tigers improve to 6-0 on the season.
(Feb 17) Auburn Fell behind Arkansas by 16 points before the game
was minutes old and scrambled valiantly closing the margin to one
point with less than three minutes to play. In the end, the
Razorbacks and their home crowd proved too much for the Tigers as
Arkansas prevailed 87-77.
(Feb 15) Bill
Beckwith, Auburn's ticket manager from 1957-1992 is dead. He was
68. Mr. B, as he was affectionately known, began working for
Auburn as a student intern in 1949. In 1951, Beckwith was named
Sports Information Director and managed media relations through
Auburn's 1957 National Championship season. In 1957, Beckwith was
named ticket manager, a post he kept until his retirement in 1992.
(Feb 13) The Crismon Tide came calling at Eaves-Memorial Coliseum
Tuesday night and fell hard in defeat to Auburn, 75-58. The came did
not count in SEC standings, but someone forgot to tell Auburn, who
took it to 'bama from the start. The Tide scored the first five
points of the game; Auburn answered and never trailed. Auburn raises
its record to 18-5 and will next play Tennessee at Knoxville on
Sunday.
"Field of Dreams" Inaugurated with Sweep of VCU
(Feb 10) The "new" Plainsman Park opened Friday
afternoon
to the collective praise of 2,188 Auburn fans in attendence. The
Tigers
wasted little time in christening the park, scoring four in the first
enroute
to a 10-1
drubbing of Virginia Commonweatlh. Tiger ace, Ryan Halla (1-0)
collected
the win. In the second game of the weekend series Auburn
downed VCU 7-3. Auburn was a
9-2 victor in the series finale Sunday.
(Feb 10) Auburn's men's basketball team went on the road in the
SEC
and for the first time in 1996, they came away with a "W".
The
Tigers defeated Florida, 73-70, Saturday night on the strength of a
3-point
basket by Ray Donald with one second left on the clock.
(Feb 10) Joe Ciampi's Lady Tiger played in the friendly confines
of
Eaves Memorial Coliseum for the first time in nearly a month on
Saturday.
Travel agreed with the Tigers as they rolled over visiting Kentucky,
88-46.
(Feb 8) Football's nation letter-of-intent signing day was a
welcome
anti-climax for Auburn coaches and fans. Auburn received letters from
all
23 players who were publicly committed to them. Despite swirling
rumors
there were no defections either from or to Auburn.
(Feb 8) The Auburn Men's basketball team returned to winning ways
Wednesday night, taming the visiting South Carolina Gamecocks, 84-73.
Auburn took an early lead and never again trailed. Ray Donald, who was
benched by AU coach Cliff Ellis, led
all scorers with a personal best 22 points.
What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been
(Feb 7) The Auburn Lady Tiger basketball team returns home Saturday
after a scheduled seven-game, month-long road trip capped by a 71-66 win
at #11 Vanderbilt Tuesday night. The Tigers were 4-2 on the trip with
one game postponed due to inclement weather. The two losses were both
close games with Auburn falling to last minute heroics. The 16-5 Tigers
will take on Kentucky Saturday at noon.
(Feb 4) Auburn lost its
first SEC home game Sunday, 78-75, to Mississippi State in a game that
had been postponed from Saturday. The Tiger drop to 15-6 after starting
the season 12-1.
Cold Rain and Snow Sinks Hoops Action
(Feb 2) Record cold and ice storms across the southeast forced
postponement of both men's and women's basketball games. Cancellation of
Auburn's visit to Arkansas was
announced early in the day. Late afternoon word came that the men's
game had been
pushed back until Sunday. If the game could not be played then, it
would likely be played in March at the end of the regular season.
(Jan 31) Road woes continued for Cliff Ellis' Auburn Tigers at
Vanderbilt, while Joe Ciampi's team rolled
over Troy State, 90-64.
(Jan 27) Auburn stopped a
two-game losing streak Saturday by scoring a 71-65 win over LSU in
Baton Rouge. The AU Tiger were coming off back-to-back road losses to
Mississippi State and 'bama.
Road Inhospitable to Tigers
(Jan 25) Both of Auburn's Basketball teams hit the road Wednesday
night with similar lack of success. Joe Ciampi's Lady Tigers lost to
'bama in Tuscaloosa on a last
second shot. The men took
it on the chin at Ole Miss, 82-69.
(Jan 21) Auburn, down by 12 at the half, stormed back to
outscore Dale Brown's Bengal Tigers, 95-87. Auburn improves its record to
15-3.
(Jan 20) Unable to hold on to a 33-27 halftime lead, the AU Lady
Tiger basketball team fell to
Mississippi State, 71-67. MSU is the second game of Auburn's current
7-game road trip. The Tigers will not play at home again until February
12.
(Jan 17) Auburn held UAB to only two field goals inside the
three-point arc to ice an 80-39 drubbing of UAB. The win marked Joe
Ciampi's 400th
career win at AU.
(Jan 15) Auburn received public commitments from a half dozen prep
stars over the weekend. Led by blue-chip QB Tamaurice
"Tee" Martin, commitments were made public by Martin, Lenardo Carson,
Jeff Dunlap, Antwoine Nolan, Andre
Rone, and Ben Leard. Although many
have indicated the Auburn HS standout Marcus Washington had commited to
Auburn, the Montgomery Advertiser quoted his coach as saying
that Washington had not made up his mind.
Auburn Men's Basketball Gains National Recognition
(Jan 15) A year-and-a-half ago when Cliff Ellis came to Auburn, if
anyone said that by this time Auburn would be ranked higher than Duke,
they'd be called "crazy" or "dreaming", but that's exactly what happened
this week. Auburn moved in and Duke was dropped from the AP
Poll. Auburn is ranked #23 in both the AP and the CNN-USA
Today Top 25.
(Jan 13) Three-point baskets from four different players, clutch free
throw shooting, and keeping turnovers to a minimum were enough to lift
Cliff Ellis' Auburn Tigers to a 89-86 victory over the Univerity of
Georgia Bulldogs Saturday afternoon. Playing before a packed house, the
Tigers put four players in double figures to raise their record to 14-3
(2-2 SEC). Auburn has won
five consecutive home games against ranked opponents.
(Jan 13) Moochie Norris, suspended over questions of eligibility,
announced that he will transfer to West Florida for the remainder of his
senior season. Seniors Norris and Chris Davis were suspended
in December by Athletic Director David Housel upon discovery that they
may have received extra benefits.
(Jan 12) The Auburn Tigers could not keep up with the Georgia
Bulldogs Friday night in Auburn. The 'dogs, who led at the half 40-30,
hit 24 of 26 free throws, including their first 20 without missing, to
put the Tigers away.
(Jan 11) Wide Receiver David Hill became the third player to
verbally commit to play football for Auburn. Hill joins DB Rodney
Crayton and kicker Jaret Holmes who selected Auburn earlier. National
signing day is February 7.
(Jan 11) Terry Bowden finished out his coaching staff with the hiring
of
Pete Jenkins to coach the defensive line. Jenkins, 54, comes to
Auburn from Mississippi State, where he held a similar position. Earlier
Bill
Oliver and
Lionel James were added to the staff.
(Jan 11) The Auburn-Northeast
Louisiana game has been moved from October 26 to November 9. This
will shift Auburn's open date prior to playing
Georgia two weeks earlier, prior to the
Arkansas game.
(Jan 10) Cliff Ellis took his Tigers into the lions' den
Wednesday night to try to win where no Auburn team has won since disco
died. Auburn trailed at the half, 43-26, but managed to cut the Tide's
lead to one at 66-65 before 'bama hit six free throws to ice the game.
Auburn takes on Georgia this Saturday.
(Jan 10) AU offensive lineman Willie Anderson announced Wednesday
that he would forego his senior season and enter the NFL draft. Anderson
is projected by some analysts as a first round draft choice.
(Jan 9) Monique Morehouse scored a
career-high 27 points to lift Auburn over the Western Kentucky
Hilltoppers 82-69. The
#20 Tigers will take on #7
Georgia in Auburn Friday night.
(Jan 9)
Lionel "Little Train" James will return to Auburn as an
offensive assistant. This fills one of the two vacancies on the staff.
The other vacancy is likely to remain open until after national signing
day, February 7.
(Jan 7) In a game that wasn't as close as the score indicated,
Auburn blasted Florida 69-53. Joe Ciampi showed that he still had one
more lesson for his former protege, Florida coach Carol Ross. Although
Ross had won the last two meetings, this one belonged to Auburn.
(Jan 6) Cliff Ellis' AU Tigers made it look easy as they handed
Arkansas their first conference loss Saturday afternoon 101-76. The Tiger
were led by Lance Weems who buried ten 3-pointers, and Franklin "The
Governor" Williams who chipped in 20 points and 10 rebounds for the
double-double.
(Jan 5)
"Brother" Bill Oliver was named Defensive
Coordinator Friday to replace
fired coach Wayne Hall. Offensive assistant and recruiting specialist
Rodney Garner and
Linebacker coach Kurt Crain added their name to the list of those
departing. Ellis Johnson, a Clemson assistant is expected by many to be
named to the defensive staff.
(Jan 3) Auburn Defensive Coordinator, Wayne
Hall confirmed that he will step down this week. Hall, 44, said in a
written statement that Terry Bowden had
requested his resignation prior to the
Outback Bowl in which Penn State scored 43 points. He and defensive
assistant Joe Whitt are the last remaining members of Pat Dye's original
staff. The leading candidate to succeed Hall is Alabama denfensive
coordinator and former AU assistant "Brother" Bill Oliver.
(Jan 3) A group that may arguably be called the best assemblage of
women's BBall players ever to play on one team came to Auburn Wednesday
night. The US
National Team downed the
number 23 ranked AU Lady Tigers 98-46. No team has yet managed to stay
within 20 points of the US team. Former Auburn all-star
Ruthie Bolton made her homecoming in front
of four busloads of her brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
(Jan 3) Too much Steve Hamer cost Auburn the game Wednesday night.
The seven-footer scored 30, pulled down nine rebounds, and blocked two
shots while holding AU Center Patrick Burke to 11 points and 23 minutes
of playing time due to foul trouble. Auburn's record fell to 12-2.
No Respect
(Jan 2) Cliff Ellis' over-acheivers are have a hard time convincing
anyone to take them seriously. At 12-1 the Tigers remain unranked in both
polls. AU will visit
Tennessee Wednesday
at 7:30 EST and entertain the pigs of Arkansas in the home SEC opener
Saturday.
(Jan 1) A deluge of rain, mud, and ugly white uniforms combined to
dampen Auburn's New Year's Day trip to the
Outback Bowl. Penn State and the elements proved
too much for the Tigers as the Nittany Lions won in a 43-14
romp. AU RB
Stephen Davis had 119 yards rushing, 92 of it prior to sustaining a
concussion in the first half. Senior QB Patrick Nix was 5 for 25 with two
interceptions.
(Dec 31) Auburn finished preparation for its New Year's morning
Outback Bowl meeting with Penn State. Auburn's
young defense will be
tested by Joe Paterno's Nittany Lions. Auburn's high-octane offense is
expected to test
State's defense as well.
(Dec 30) The Auburn Tigers extended their record to 12-1 Saturday
night in Tallahassee with an 84-54 romp over homestanding Florida A&M. The
Tigers reached the finals with a 92-56
win over Norfolk State in the opening round of the classic on Friday.
Patrick Burke was named to the all-tournament team along with tourney MVP
Wes Flanigan. This is the first time in AU history that a team has won
three tournaments in one season.
(Dec 30) The Auburn Lady Tigers, smarting from losses to Stanford and
Wake Forest, looked to return to winning ways Saturday. At the half
Auburn led the Tarheels 34-29. Ciampi's Tigers stormed out in the second
half, scoring the first 10 points. After UNC cut the lead to five, Auburn
coasted to the 14-point victory. Auburn is 10-2.
(Dec 29) The Lady Tigers basketball team collapsed late in the first
game of the Big Four Challenge against Wake Forest, 66-56. The Deacons
mounted a 16-5 charge in the last 4:42 to erase a 51-50 Auburn lead.
(Dec 25) Oh the heels of their first loss, Auburn's Lady Tiger
basketball team advanced into the AP top 25 this week. They remained #21
in the coaches'
poll. The AU Men were the fastest NCAA Division I team to win ten
games, but have failed to impress
voters with a less than stellar December
schedule.
(Dec 20) Joe Ciampi's Auburn Tiger Basketball team suffered their
first setback 63-44 against #5 Stanford in the championship of the Fry's
Cardinal Classic in Palo Alto, California. Auburn trailed by 15 at the
half and had cut the lead to 9 with 4:52 to play before Stanford went on a
12-2 run to end the game. Auburn players Laticia Morris and Monique
Morehouse were named to the all-tournament team. Auburn reach the finals
by
downing Eastern Washington 69-39. The loss drops Auburn to 9-1.
Auburn Men Win 10th
(Dec 19) The unranked Auburn Tigers became the first NCAA division I
team to notch double-figure wins. Auburn downed
Wofford 73-56 Tuesday night to extend their record to 10-1. The team
will not play again
until after Christmas.
AU Women Hoopsters Remain #21 in Coaches' Poll
(Dec 18) Auburn's Lady Tiger Basketball team stayed number 21 in the
USA Today/CNN Coaches' Poll. The 8-0 Tigers were not ranked in the AP
Poll.
AU Hoopsters Win First Four of 5-Game Home Stand
(Dec 17) Auburn Mens' and Womens' basketball teams are combining to
present a holiday extravaganza for Auburn basketball fans. Cliff Ellis's
9-1 men downed
Northeast Lousiana 80-71 Friday and Coastal
Carolina 82-66 Sunday. They will take on Wofford at
7PM CST Tuesday. The Lady Tigers ran their record to 8-0 with wins
over AUM
Thursday and Jacksonville State (89-61) Saturday. They will hit the
road next for tournament
action Tuesday and Wednesday in Palo Alto, California.
Five Tigers named to Senior Bowl Squad
(Dec 17) Five Auburn Tigers will be playing the 1996 Senior Bowl January 20 in
Mobile, Alabama. Running back Stephen Davis, tight end Andy Fuller,
linebacker Anthony Harris, kicker Matt Hawkins and center Shannon Roubique
were named to play for the South. TBS will televise the game.
(Dec 13) AU Basketball coach Cliff Ellis received more bad
news from the investigation into Moochie Norris and Chris Davis's
eligibility. As a result, the players remain ineligible and Ellis has
lost the services of one of his assistant coaches.
(Dec 12) When Joe
Paterno meets Terry
Bowden at midfield prior to the Outback Bowl on January 1st, he will
bring the
experience of 25 bowl trips into the game. Terry Bowden will be
coaching in his first bowl game. Strangely, it's just that
fact that has Joe-Pa worried.
(Dec 9) Seven home games, including visits from LSU
and Arkansas,
highlight Auburn's 1996 Football schedule. First-time meetings with Fresno
State, South
Carolina, and UAB
are slated.
(Dec 3) Auburn
has a New Year's morning date to meet Joe Paterno's
Nittany Lions in the Outback Bowl in Tampa. Penn State was the "number
3" pick to represent the Big 10 in the Outback Bowl. Auburn was third
choice in the SEC behind Florida and Tennessee. In the opening line Penn
State was installed as a two-point favorite. Tickets in
the Auburn section are on sale now. General public tickets are
available through Ticketmaster.

(Dec 12) Auburn took it on the road Tuesday night to play
the South Alabama Jaguars and emerged on top 59-50.
Auburn held a 33-29 lead at the half.
With 1:40 to play in the second half, Auburn took a
54-48 lead as Ray Donald hit two free throws.
Ray Donald was again fouled with 38.6 seconds to play. Donald hit both to
make the score 56-48. Again Donald was fouled and put the game away by
hitting both at the 19.6 mark. Donald and
Lance Weems led Auburn in scoring with 15 points each. Auburn is 7-1.
(Dec 10) Auburn's Lady Tiger basketball squad chalked up a 56-50 SEC
win on the home hardwood against the South Carolina Gamecocks. In a game
in which the visiting 'cocks were not whistled for a foul in the second
half until the 1:56 mark, Auburn combined an agressive defense, with
timely three-point shooting to edge Carolina.
(Dec 9) Unchallenged
in thirteen contests, the Team USA womens' basketball team breezed to
win 97-40 over 23rd ranked Old Dominion. Former AU standout
Ruthie Bolton led all scorers with 21 points. Auburn will play Team
USA, January 3, in Auburn.
Auburn Dr Pepper Classic Champs
(Dec 9) For the first time in history, Auburn has won two tournaments
in the same season. In the final game of Dr Pepper Classic in Waco, TX,
Auburn easily
defeated hometown favorite, Baylor 83 to 64. Auburn advanced to the
final by
beating Liberty University 63-58 on Friday. Pat Burke, Lance Weems and
Wes Flanigan were named to the all tournament team. Flanigan was
tournament MVP.
(Dec 6) Six Auburn players were named to the AP All-SEC team,
including three first-teamers. Center Shannon Roubique, kicker Matt
Hawkins and linebacker Marcellus Mostella were named by the Associated
Press as members of the first team. Tight end Andy Fuller, offensive
tackle Willie Anderson, and running back Stephen Davis were named to the
second team. All except Hawkins made the Coaches'
All-SEC team, with Fuller and Anderson gaining first team honors
there.
(Dec 2)
Martavious Houston was named Top Defensive Freshman in the Southeastern
Conference by the Knoxville News-Sentinel. Houston leads a list of
four true freshman on Auburn's defense to make the list.
(Dec 2) The
Birmingham Post-Herald is reporting that Auburn may soon begin a
series with Clemson in Football.
(Dec 3) The Tigers won one and lost another in basketball action
Sunday. Joe Ciampi's Lady Tigers breezed on the road to a 69-52 win
over the South Alabama Jaguars. The men, playing on the home
hardwood, had a much tougher time of it, falling
to in-state rival UAB 66-54.
(Dec 1) Joe Ciampi's Auburn Tigers took a lead early and were never
headed Friday night in Auburn.
(Nov 30) Auburn
returned to action Thursday night against in-state rival Jacksonville
State.
(Nov 26) Auburn fell behind Louisville by 22 points at the half
before mounting a
furious second-half comeback effort to take the lead with just under
three minutes remaining in the game. During the last 5 and a half
minutes, the Tigers outscored Denny Crum's Cardinals 22-5.
Back-to-back-to-back treys by Lance Weems put Auburn on top for good as
Auburn held on to win 82-78. Auburn
downed James Madsion 82-71 Saturday afternoon to advance to the finals
of the eight-team San Juan Shootout in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Auburn
scored a 70-60
victory over Lasalle Friday night in the opening round.
(Nov 25) Auburn won the championship of their own Auburn Dial Classic
Saturday afternoon with a victory over Southwest Texas State. On Friday,
Auburn had little trouble with St. Bonaventure as they posted a 91-34
victory.
(Nov 18) Julius "Doc" Robinson will bring his outstanding talents and
one of the best names in this season's prep graduating class to the
plains next fall. Robinson leads a early recruiting class that has been
called the best class in many years.
(Nov 10) Team
USA continues to march unchallenged through the ranks of College
basketball's top womens' teams.
